Photographing the Mizukawa Family in Provo Canyon was such a special experience. Claire and Dave are dear friends of mine — we go all the way back to our early days as young married couples at BYU. Over the last 12+ years, we’ve shared life’s ups and downs: new babies, cross-country moves, career changes, and countless late-night chats. I feel so lucky to call them friends and even luckier to photograph their family when they visit Utah each year.
Classic Utah Mountains and a Moose Sighting!
Claire and Dave wanted that classic Utah mountain scenery, so we headed up into Provo Canyon for its iconic greenery and peaceful views. When we got to our planned location, we were greeted by a moose mama and her baby — super cool, but also a sign to keep our distance. Thankfully, I always have a backup plan, and we quickly shifted to a new spot that still gave us dreamy light and gorgeous mountain views.
The Perfect Blend of Classic and Candid
We captured all the must-have posed family portraits, but also leaned into natural, emotive storytelling. With fun games and relaxed prompts, the Mizukawa crew had such a good time — and it really shows in the photos. Their connection, laughter, and love made this session feel easy and joy-filled.
A Moment Just for Mom
We wrapped up the evening with some solo portraits of Claire. Moms are so often behind the camera, and it felt important to give her a moment in front of it. Claire is such a beautiful soul — thoughtful, grounded, and kind — and it was such a joy to capture her radiance.
